Mickey Koth: Fiddle, flute, whistle, and recorder

Mickey's musical background was strictly classical for the first 40 years of her life. Her classical background includes two masters degrees, one in music history and one in music librarianship. Flute was her main instrument through graduate school, but she also played viola. Along the way, she picked up recorder and viola da gamba, two Renaissance instruments.

At age 39, she started contra dancing and loved the music so much, she rented a violin for her 40th birthday and soon began studying with bluegrass fiddler and dobro player Stacy Phillips. Before the end of her first year playing, she had joined a pick-up band that became the contra dance and concert band called Wild Notes.

In the band, Mickey is known for finding obscure, but wonderful tunes for the band to play and for writing beautiful harmonies. She is also known for bringing out new and strange instruments for the enjoyment and occasional bemusement of her band mates. By day, Mickey is a mild-mannered music librarian in the Yale University Music Library. Fiddling in the Wild Notes allows her to let her hair down once in a while!
